Big Robot Highlighted as Innovative Downtown Business by University of Wisconsin
From the University of Wisconsin’s Center for Community and Economic Development, Big Robot was Highlighted as an Innovative Downtown Business:
Many downtowns no longer have the traditional department stores that once anchored “main street.” Long gone are the days when Downtown was the one-stop shopping center for the community. Further, in today’s competitive retail market, many chains continue to bypass downtown in their site selection process.
However, many downtowns are coming alive with new economic activity. These vibrant downtowns often have a few innovative businesses that are attracting people back to the heart of town. These businesses often build on downtown’s sense of place and offer products and services not found in the big box stores.
In Tipp City, Ohio, the Big Robot Game Café is essentially a service-oriented business that has developed a distinctive marketing niche by providing a safe & comfortable environment where primarily younger patrons can enjoy a variety of electronic gaming options in a socially relevant atmosphere. In addition to the gaming, the Café carries a variety of pre-packaged food and drinks along with a small selection of retail items such as video game titles, Lego & Star Wars-themed toys, and magazines. The Big Robot Game Café bolsters its niche by offering specialized game tournaments, all-night chaperoned lock-ins, and themed parties. For more information, visit www.bigrobotgamecafe.com.

Big Dog Walking Robot
Here at Big Robot we love big robots. Here’s an article on the Big Dog pack robot being developed for the US army. The most interesting thing I found (other than the way it looks when it’s trying to catch itself) is how people reacted in the comments area to seeing it kicked – most people seemed to feel it wasn’t a big stretch to thinking of the robot as a living creature. Many felt sorry for it, as I did.
From Boing Boing Gadgets:
Here’s some more footage of Boston Dynamics’ Big Dog, the loping and headless military robot. It’s easily the scariest real-life one I’ve ever seen, and yet, when it recovers from being kicked in that first video, the illusion of intelligence is overwhelming. It’ll be a few years before it’s ready for the battlefield, according to this report.
BioWare Sets Up New Montreal Team to Work on Mass Effect 2 – GameDaily
From GameDaily:
GameDaily BIZ just got off the phone with EA’s vp of communications, Jeff Brown, and BioWare co-founder and CEO Ray Muzyka, who revealed that BioWare is establishing a new BioWare Montreal group to work within the existing EA Montreal studio. Muzyka said that the team will be working on the highly anticipated Mass Effect sequel to start with. That said, Mass Effect 2 is still very much a dual effort at both Edmonton and Montreal.
Muzyka noted that the goal is to have around 30 people in Montreal and about half of the staff will be people brought in from BioWare’s Edmonton studio location many of these folks worked on Mass Effect, with the other half consisting of new hires from the great talent pool in the Montreal area. Those interested in applying should head over to careers.bioware.com.
“We’re really excited about it, and we think it’s going to be a huge opportunity to tap into the talent base in Montreal while supplementing our existing teams in Edmonton and Austin, which are doing some great stuff on all the other projects BioWare’s working on,” Muzyka said. “The growth we’re seeing in Montreal is aligned with what [EA CEO] John Riccitiello laid out as the goals; we’re still investing in innovations and new IPs that EA’s going to support.”
