We Have HALO 3-ODST!

odst wallpaperHalo 3: ODST is a prologue to the events in Halo 3 and will focus on the legendary ODSTs or “Orbital Drop Shock Troopers” as they drop into the ruined city of New Mombasa, looking for clues behind the Covenant’s catastrophic attack on the city.

Halo 3: ODST is a first-person shooter video game, developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft. It was released on the Xbox 360 video game console exclusively on September 22, 2009, being nearly two years after the initial release of Halo 3. Players assume the roles of elite human United Nations Space Command soldiers known as Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (ODSTs) during the events of Halo 2 and Halo 3. After the alliance of alien races known as the Covenant attack Earth, the player explores the ruined city of New Mombasa to discover what happened to their missing teammates, separated from each other as they entered the city.

Bungie initially conceived ODST as a small side project to produce in the lull between Halo 3s completion and Halo: Reach. Instead of featuring recognizable characters such as the Master Chief from previous games, the developers focused on the ODSTs. Story director Joseph Staten penned a detective story utilizing film noir settings, design, and characters. Composer Martin O’Donnell abandoned his previous Halo themes to create a quieter, jazz-influenced sound. During development, the game grew in scope to that of a full-sized game.[1]

From Slashdot:
The Opposable Thumbs blog reports that Guitar Hero III has reached a financial milestone, becoming the first individual video game to reach $1 billion in total sales. The number is even higher if you consider the rest of the franchise. In addition to helping drive the video game industry during tough economic times much like the Wii, it’s helping other industries as well: “… aside from the fact that Guitar Hero: Aerosmith had sold three times as many copies as the band’s last album during their respective first weeks, musicians whose music is featured in the game has seen a rise in music sales to the tune of 15-843 percent.” And CVG notes, “… two-thirds of non-musicians exposed to music games plan to start playing a real instrument in the next couple of years.” Also, Rock Band creator Harmonix may be looking into a partnership with the record labels to sell music for use outside of the games.

Rock Band Execs to Get $300 Million Bonus

From Minyanville:

Based on the explosive sales of the popular video game Rock Band, Viacom (VIA) has agreed to pay the game developers an astounding $300 million in bonuses. The payment would be made as part of Viacom’s 2006 acquisition of Harmonix – the company behind the game.   Finally, a corporate bonus we can all get behind.

Rock Band expands on Guitar Hero’s original model of players rocking out on guitar controllers in sync to popular music. This version allows up to 4 simultaneous players — or bandmates — to play lead and bass guitars, drums, and vocals. The simple yet addictive gameplay is responsible for 7 million sales in 13 countries, 26 million song downloads and countless domestic disturbance calls from neighbors. It’s also one of very few titles to span the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii platforms.   For exceeding performance targets last quarter, Harmonix founders Alex Rigopulos and Eran Egozy received $150 million – and now stand to gain an additional $150 million in 2009.
